-Recently, I was fortunate enough to attend another ACU Community Lunch. Out of all the events and meals we share with our Abilene community, these are some of my favorites.
Dr. Gary McCaleb, Vice President of ACU, and his team put on an incredible lunch where the community of Abilene can come together and gain wisdom from both Dr. McCaleb and his special guest. It is my understanding that, each special guest has some sort of tie to ACU or the Abilene community and is an elite professional in skills that we can all learn from. There is a lunch served while they speak, and then the audience gets to listen to a question and answer session with the guest, and even ask some of our own questions. These events are very important to myself, and to Oddly Natural as a company, as we try and build our own brand in the community.
One of the guests that I have been most impressed with recently was Tom Craven, an former executive at Disney. Craven worked his way up from the Jungle Cruise ride operator to the Manager of the Entertainment Division at Walt Disney World. He had his hand in the grand opening of Walt Disney World, Epcot Center, Disney Studios, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. He shared with us incredible stories of his 41-year career with Disney.
When he was asked about his lasting memories from Disney and how his team decided what was going to make the stage vs. what was going to be cut, Craven left us with a comment that has stuck with me.
His answer was, “That they were always reminded that the story is the most important thing. The story is why you are here.”
This statement is extremely wise and transcends the entertainment industry. This answer is what our motto should be in so many areas of life, but especially in the advertising and marketing division. At Oddly Natural, we make our decisions on how to best promote our clients business by learning about their story, both as an individual and as a team. We then work together to decide how to best portray their companies story.
We really want to help our small business partners tell their story. This mindset is where marketing is heading. We must captivate an audience that has countless other distractions and products by giving them a real and honest story.
